The Lucky Community
by Chris Grygo
The wind blew in strong
gusts as we sat in Prospect Park that late summer Saturday afternoon.
Our community of Catholic Young Adults quietly
nestled among the trees, praying Mass in the great Cathedral of God's
creation. Inspired by the beauty of nature, gathered together as a
community of faith, challenged by the word of God (honestly, they were
tough readings!), one thought repeated over and over within: we must be
the luckiest people alive.
Think about it. From the very beginning of time, our God has come to us
with the force of wind not unlike that which enveloped us in the park.
The conditions at Praise in the Park made it easy to locate ourselves
in the history of God's people. Before the earth was formed, the Spirit
blew over the waters like a mighty wind. God later blew the breath of
life into the nostrils of the humans fashioned out of clay, and was
heard by Adam and Eve moving around the Garden at the breezy time of
day. Centuries later, Christ breathed upon the Disciples and promised
to send the Holy Spirit to guide them. The Advocate descended with the
sound of driving wind at Pentecost, inspiring the Apostles to speak
with a new and foreign voice. Today, the wind reminds us of the
presence of God who is Creator, Word Made Flesh, and Sanctifying Spirit
given freely and forever. We must be the luckiest people alive.
